Mission
What is Montessori?
|
Lawrence Montessori School has its foundation on Maria Montessori's
philosophy which guides us to help children unfold their journey
into the love and joy of learning through a very important stage
of their lives. We believe that children, when immersed in a respectful
and nurturing environment that is age-appropriate, can explore and
discover their unknown abilities, and having discovered, can cultivate
them. A staff of dedicated teachers facilitates a learning environment
that encourages children to grow in independence and freedom within
appropriate limits, develop self-discipline and motivation, and learn
social skills necessary for success in life. We value diverse cultural and
ethnic heritages that families bring to the school community and encourage
parents and children to share their traditions and customs with one
another to help create a rich and harmonious learning environment.
To help children achieve their full potential, we offer Montessori
classes for children who are 14 months to 6 years old. Our
classroom environment is designed first and foremost with the children in mind.
Multicultural and crosscultural aspect of learning is also an important part of
our curriculum. The children are encouraged to listen and speak in many different
languages such as Spanish, Korean, Hindi, Japanese, Chinese, just to name a few.

|
Our mission is to help children discover the joy of learning by guiding them
in an age-appropriate environment through individualized activities
and interactions with children and adults within a safe, nurturing and loving
community.
Our education method is based on authentic and faithful interpretation of Montessori
philosophy as originally formulated and developed by Dr. Maria Montessori and further
illuminated by many scholars and practitioners. We strive to bring to
the parents of the wider community an opportunity to help their
children realize their innate potential in an affordable way possible.

Montessori method has its origin in an Italian physician who first observed
and analyzed how children build themselves from what they find in their
environment. Strongly felt by her commitment to help mentally challenged
children, she started a pre-school program for the children living in the
slums of San Lorenzo district in Italy.
She observed that the children learned best when they were engaged in
purposeful activities in an environment that is stimulating and appropriate
to meet their physical needs. Drawing upon her scientific training, she developed
materials, activities, and method based on what she observed children to
do naturally by themselves unassisted by adults. Children teach themselves.
This simple but profound truth inspired Montessori's lifelong pursuit of
educational reform, methodology, psychology, teaching, and teacher training - all
based on her dedication to furthering the self-creating process of the child.
Maria Montessori first visited the United States in 1913, the same year that
Alexander Graham Bell and his wife Mabel founded the Montessori Educational
Association at their Washington, DC, home. Among other strong American Supporters
were Thomas Edison and Helen Keller. After Montessori's death in 1952, the practice
enjoyed a renaissance in America as parents sought new learning options for their
children. In 1960, parent and teacher Dr. Nancy McCormick Rambusch founded
the American Montessori Society (AMS) to meet an overwelming
public demand for more information on Montessori Education.

Some notable people who were benefitted from receiving Montessori education
